USBGA - Double Show
Eastern Kentucky Hills Goat Association
Morehead, KY
4 August 2007

It was a double show...
Two judges in the ring at once ..
Linda and Chris Fleming

We had planned on spending our weekend in Crossville, TN at the IBGA Show put on by Kenny Carey but heard that Philip Myers was going to be the judge, so we looked for another show.

We read about the Eastern KY Hills Goat Assoication USBGA Double Goat Show in Morehead, KY. After talking to Kris Collins, we decided to make the long drive (375 miles).

We chose our team. Leading off at 3 months old, CCF Beverly, a percentage doeling, followed by CCF Mystery our 1 year old percentage doe. In the fullblood doeling category, we led off with CCF Glory's Duchess SA and CCF Splash SA in the 3-6 month class; a set of sisters, CCF Cookie and CCF Dancer, at 6-9 months; and finishing off our doelings were CCF Justice SA and CCF Nixie SA in the 9 to 12 month class. Our senior does were CCF Kattie's Glory SA at 2-3 year old, and, anchoring our does, BNZ Venus (the old work horse). We decided on three Bucklings, CCF Simba SA at 0-3 months, CCF Glory's Duke SA at 3-6 months, and finishing out our Team with RRD V907 Intrepid SA.

Loading Friday morning, we got underway around 11 am vs. the 9 am we had intended. Everyone was as happy as they could be considering it was over 90 degrees when we left the farm. When we go to Nashville, the thermometer inside the truck indicated over 100 degrees. We stopped and poured three bags of ice on the goats. They though it was a hail strom, but it did drop the temp in the trailer. About two hours later we repeated the process.

Arriving at 7 pm, we off-loaded the animals into pens, and the goats were now uncrowded and in the shade. We started bathing and grooming, getting to Venus and Splash. The darkness closed in and we headed for the motel. Early Saturday morning we finished bathing and grooming. Due to the lateness we would not bathe the three youngest goats, Dutchess, Duke, and Simba although Simba did get a "touch-up."

With two goats in three of the classes, Pat recruited Gary Hounshell to help show.

CCF Beverly, who we were delivering to Tami Hounshell, was our first to enter the ring. We joked with Tami that the sale price would go up if she took a championship. She took a first and a second place. but did not place in the drive.

CCF Mystery took a first from both judges, but did not place in the drive.

With eight in the Fullblood show, we started off with Gary taking in Duchess and Ken took Splash in the 3-6 mo class. Splash received a first and a second; Duchess received a first and third; neither placed in the drive.

Cookie and Dancer were next to enter the ring, Cookie was award two second places and Dancer two thirds.

Justice and Nixie finished off the Doeling catagory. Justice was awarded a first and a second. Nixie was awarded a second and a first.

Clear Creek Farms had five of the six doelings into the Championship "drive" (there were no kids in the 0-3 month class), with Justice being awarded the Reserve Champion Doeling by Chris Fleming while Linda Fleming gave a Reserve Championship Doeling rosetta to Cookie.

With no one in the yearling doe catagory, a much-needed breather was in order. It was hot!!

In the Senior Does category, Glory, 2-3 year old, took third from each judge.

We woke up Venus in time for her entrance. She took a first from both judges in the Over-five Class. Remaining in the ring for the Senior Doe "drive", Venus took a Grand Champion Senior Doe rosetta from Linda Fleming and a Reserve Champion Doe rosetta from Chris Fleming.

Venus remained in the ring for Overall Grand Champion Doe competition. Linda Fleming award her a Reserve.

Bucklings - We had concerns over the behavior of the little dudes. Walking on a lead was not yet a part of their vocabulary.

Simba was first in the 0-3 mo. He sorta walked, when he wasn't being dragged; but the judges liked him, and he got two first places.

Duke, only 6 days into the class, was overpowered by the balance of the field and finished fifth. Both judges pointed out the ages difference; and Chris commented that given another 45 days of age, the placements would have been different.

RRD 907 Intrepid SA, 9-12 months, was our last goat in the show. We did not want to be totally barn blind about Intripid, so we decided to bring him to the show for a critical analysis. After he was selected first by both judges, we asked if they would not point out his strong points but to give us his weakness. We received the coments we wanted from both judges. Thanks to both Linda and Chris Fleming, we have a better appreciation for Intrepid and a good idea which does he will get to breed.

In the drive for Championship Buckling, Simiba and Intrepid were presented. Intrepid took Grand Champion Junior Buck from both judges. Intrepid was stunned. He re-entered the ring for Overall Champion Buck, but was overpowered by the senior bucks.

We wish to thank Kristin Collins for an exceptional job in putting on the show, Gary and Tami Hounshell for their assistance in grooming, fitting the goats, assistance in loading out, and specifically for Gary's help in the ring.

We enjoy showing under the Flemings and look forward to our next opportunity to see them in the ring.

A very special thanks to Brandon and Brittany Mitchell for taking care of the 'goats at home'. Without their help, this show would have been missed.
